Gardening

When I was very young, probably about 5, my Grandfather took me on a special "date".  He lived about 5 hours away and although we visited regularly it was a rare occurrence to be able to go out with Grandpa.  This was a day to remember.  We ran some errands, probably stopped for some ice cream, then went to the Rick's College Gardens where, I later found out, he was a manager of some sort.  I remember seeing the acres of stunning gardens, walking hand in hand as he showed me his favorite areas and introduced me to some of his colleagues.

I was in awe.  Never in my young life had a seen such well manicured beauty.  I had seen the scenic vistas of the  Rocky Mountains, the wonders of Yellowstone, the beauty in the natural world around me but this was created... by people.  The mere concept fascinated my young mind and imprinted me deeply.  It was beautiful, the way each garden was so unique and yet a part of the whole.  They had vegetable gardens that were stunning, petunia beds planted to mimic a rainbow (my favorite at the time), weeping vines over arching tree branches that one had to walk through to get to the next "room".  At that young age I knew I wanted to be a creator of beautiful things, I wanted to make a difference in whatever corner of the world I lived in by making it inspiring to whomever stumbled across it...

...even if it was just one little girl on a special date with her Grandpa.
